Our Solutions
At any given time, more than 6,500 vessels are idle at approximately 200 anchorages worldwide, collectively emitting over 30 million tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and associated air pollutants.
In response to the challenges of decarbonising the maritime sector, Stillstrom's vision for Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones offers a concrete solution to a complex problem. Our approach is powered by innovative offshore electrification technology that enables vessels to access low GHG emissions energy while anchored.
We aim to build a global network of Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. These zones will allow vessels to connect to offshore power while idling, reducing reliance on fossil fuels or high-cost e-fuels.
Stillstrom's offshore power solutions are designed for operational safety, ease of use, and integration with existing infrastructure. Power can be supplied from the onshore grid or renewable sources, depending on location and setup.
Our solution includes multiple offshore charging points connected through a centralised hub. The Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones are developed with consideration for maritime traffic and regulatory frameworks.
Our concepts are designed with safety and operability at its core and include options for safe mooring and weathervaning. We align with shore power standards and actively contribute to industry standardisation efforts.
By enabling direct electrification, our solution provides a reliable and lower-emissions power source for vessels at anchor. This supports cost-effective decarbonisation compared to continued use of fossil fuels or e-fuels.
Do you have questions about Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones?
We've compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you understand the benefits and implementation.
Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones (ZEAS) is a concept developed by Stillstrom and will be designated areas in anchorage where vessels can anchor and connect to Stillstrom’s sustainable power solutions instead of running their engines while idle. These zones are equipped with advanced power and charging stations that provide clean energy, reducing emissions and environmental impact while the vessels are not actively sailing.
A wide range of commercial vessels can benefit from Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones, including container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, support vessels, cargo ships and other vessels that spend time idling offshore. Any vessel that needs to maintain power while idling to cover its base and hotel load can utilize the sustainable energy solutions provided by Stillstrom’s offshore power and charging systems.
Power is typically supplied from the onshore grid and may include renewable energy sources such as wind or solar depending on the setup. All energy sources are selected to reduce GHG emissions compared to conventional marine fuels.
Charging and power delivery in Zero Emissions Anchorage Zones is facilitated through a specialized connection system designed for maritime use. Vessels connect to the offshore power grid using secure, water and weather-resistant cables and connectors, ensuring a safe and efficient transfer of power. This system is monitored and managed to provide consistent and reliable energy to the anchored vessels.
Green Anchorage Zones offer several benefits:
- Environmental Impact: Reduced emissions and lower environmental footprint due to the use of renewable energy.
- Cost Efficiency: Lower fuel costs and maintenance expenses for vessels as they rely on cleaner, cheaper energy sources.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps vessels meet stringent environmental regulations and standards.
- Operational Efficiency: Provides a reliable source of power, ensuring that essential systems remain operational without interruption.
Even vessels using low GHG emissions fuels can benefit by reducing fuel consumption further. Electrification is often more cost-effective and energy-efficient than using e-fuels while idling.
